Part of Me… Shaping Mental Spaces

In collaboration with doc! photo magazine, on behalf of FOTODOK, I co-edited the magazine’s 48th issue, which focuses on the subject of (mental) health. In this publication, FOTODOK introduces artists participating in the exhibition Part of Me… Shaping Mental Spaces

doc! photo magazine was established in 2012 by BLOW UP PRESS and is dedicated to contemporary documentary photography. Similar to FOTODOK, doc! is interested in shedding light on urgent societal matters of today. It is a so-called “mook”—a publication format that combines features of both a magazine and a book. Published once a year, doc! brings together 10 carefully selected portfolios that are given significant attention and space within its pages, with individual design approaches to each. Simultaneously, photographic projects are framed by in-depth commissioned texts that span a variety of formats.

As part of issue #48, Rebecca Simons speaks with Mandy Nijhof and Mieke Hessels; all of whom work with the subject of sexualized violence and its effects. The work that shouldn’t have to exist is a recorded conversation between the three artists, which is experimental in form, and powerful and urgent in terms of its content. Inner Journey by Marvel Harris is presented, in which he tells the story of the battle with gender identity and autism. Curator Lara Nuberg writes about Peggy van Mosselaar’s Tali Pusat––a project about her mother’s advancing dementia––which is informed by the research of contemporary second and third generation Indo-European female creatives in the Netherlands who seek to reconnect with their ancestry. Writer Sebastien Boncy’s House of Difference is a personal reflection on the work oc·u·lus /ˈäkyələs by Irene Antonia Diane Reece, his former student. And finally, Gwen Pol presents a kaleidoscopic impression of the many projects and faces that comprise Outsiderland (Jan Hoek and Bruin Parry; Aàdesokan Adedayo and Klaus Compagnie, Yasmine van Haesebroucke; Niels-Jan Tavernier; Laetitia Bica and Samuel Cariaux; Martine Derks and Model Nina 666).

This is FOTODOK’s second collaboration with doc! photo magazine; it follows issue #46, which FOTODOK co-edited in 2020. We are happy to join forces once again to produce a publication that creates valuable and autonomous content, while providing further context to the exhibition Part of Me… Shaping Mental Spaces
